It is important to use literacy in the classroom. It enhances learning and encourages students to think and explore. It helps students retain the information they have learned.
Things I will implement in my classroom....
I will definitely encourage critical thinking/literacy into my classroom. I want my students to be able the critically analyze websites they see, books they read, and information they are presented with. I will encourage them to explore and create beyond what they already know.
I am going to use all of the activities and lesson plans that we created for this class. The vocabulary assignment helped me create activities that encouraged learning of vocabulary terms.
As a teacher, I will often refer to the text set I created to find ideas for a class library or books that my students could read to explore the content more.
I will be using digital technology in my classroom. I will start a class blog where students can post lab results/pictures and can discuss topics and resources that relate to the curriculum.
How it helped....
This class helped my familiarize myself with literacy as a whole. It opened my mind up that text is not simply a published book. Text is a wide variety of resources to learning. This class helped me become a better teacher by learning how to implement literacy into my classroom.
I really like your idea of having a classroom blog or website where students can discuss ideas. I have thought about doing that to have a place where students can print off handouts they have lost or to see when an assignment is due, but I like the idea of having a space open to discussion as well. I totally agree that this class helped me understand all that literacy entails and that it is not just reading books.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree that the vocabulary section of this class was incredibly helpful. I will be using the lessons I created for this class in my classroom. I really liked your literacy definition as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree with how this class helped familiarize us with literacy. I didn't realize in our discipline how there are different types of texts. Even though our discipline is so hands on I think literacy is important to implement because children need literacy skills.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of having a classroom blog! I think that it may be a familiar enough setting that students will be comfortable interacting with one another (similar to our blogs in this classroom).
ReplyDeleteAlso, isn't it great that we have some lesson plans ready to go now? I will definitely be using all of my lesson plans from this class. I think they will be so helpful!
I really like how you said literacy encourages students to think and to explore. To me, that is the whole point--literacy instruction leads to clearer and richer thinking about a topic, because students are reading about that topic, and discussing/explaining that topic to others through writing or oral language. Each time you do that, you are considering that topic in a new way.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great final posting!
